NMC and GJA called for security for Tigereye PI before and after number 12

After the death of the slain journalist Ahmed Hussein Suale, the Tigereye PI member, who sad event occurred on Wednesday evening, by gunmen in madina, Accra, there have been many controversies as to who is responsible for the young man’s death. Many Ghanaians have publicly accused the Assin Central member of parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, for the cause. This was as a result of a video posted by the leader of the Tigereye PI boss Anas Aremaeyaw Anas on his Facebook page about the lawmaker. Hours after the video went viral, many have also called on the CID to investigate Anas as he is also a suspect. Meanwhile, the chairman of the National Media Commission,Yaw Boadu -Ayeboafoh, says displaying the picture of the slain journalist live on television, months before his assassination, does not make Maverick member of parliament culpable.

In a Facebook post by one of the lawyers of the Tigereye PI, TheSammy Darko, Tigereye PI wrote to the NMC for protection against threat before and after the release of number 12 which has normalized our football in Ghana. Below is what he posted.

Before and after release of Number12, Anas and Tiger Eye PI crew received lots of threats (harm & death). Tiger eye made these know to Police, NMC and GJA. There were other security agencies which remains confidential meetings

This was the response from NMC:

June1, 2018

“The National Media Commission (NMC) finds current discussions regarding the permissible scope and methods of investigative journalism, which have been rekindled by the most recent expose by Anas Aremeyaw Anas healthy and necessary for the qualitative growth of media in support of consolidating Ghana’s democracy.”

NMC noted that independent professional journalism based on independently verifiable facts plays a vital role in the government giving account to the public and also informs the people on the government’s wrongdoings and provides the public with a space to participate in decision making.

NMC advised all administrative justice actors including the police, prosecuitors and judges to ensure journalists and media outlets are protected.

According to NMC, a society can only grow when it respects ideas and tolerant different attitude and no place for violence.

“The NMC believes that society grows when there is respect for contending ideas and tolerance for differing attitudes. Hence, our nation’s path towards growth has no place for the use of violence in processing claims on society.”

The commission also reminds the public that the Constitution provides legitimate avenues for recourse for those who feel wronged by the media

“We, therefore, urge that anybody who has concerns regarding the media, or any journalist and how they carry out their functions, should seek redress at the Commission, in the law courts or through any methods prescribed by Ghanaian law.”

The Ghana journalist association also in the press release called for the security agency to provide security for Anas and his Tigereye PI

The NMC advised the administrative justice actors for protection. Did the security agencies failed to provide adequate security to the Tigereye PI members leading to the death of the slain journalist Ahmed?
